Meetings, Latest News

OAMTA meetings are held September through May, on the first Tuesday of each month at 9:15 AM.  We conduct a business meeting, followed by a program.  We have covered many topics of interest to the independent teacher, such as developing a brochure and a studio policy, dealing with the exceptional student, choosing appropriate literature for students at each level, preparing for competitions e.g., WMTA auditions and Solo-Ensemble, keeping students' interest, and many more.
A favorite part of our meetings are egg-timer questions.  Anyone can ask a question that they need help or input with and the egg timer is flipped for short responses.

...an invitation to OAMTA

We believe that you would bring unique talents, perspective and experience to OAMTA.  Whether you teach piano, voice, strings, winds or percussion, are just beginning to teach or have taught for many years, we welcome you and we know that our programs will enrich your teaching!!

You are invited to our first meeting--or any meeting--to have a look-see.  Our programs will be of great interest to you, and you are welcome to attend one at no charge.

HELEN MILLER SCHOLARSHIP

Its Background
Helen Miller was an old time piano teacher in Oshkosh - in fact, we had an OAMTA meeting at her house in the very olden days!     When she died, her daughter, Gina Nelson, left some money as a memorial to Helen - and wanted OAMTA to use its yearly interest for small  scholarship awards for deserving keyboard students.  Thus, many students have received an award over the years, in memory of Helen Miller.

Oshkosh Area Music Teachers Association

2010 Member of the Year
Mary Pingry

Mary Pingry began teaching piano while in college,
and has taught for 45 years.

She joined WMTA in 1972, and was a founding member of the Oshkosh Area Keyboard (now ‘Music’) Teachers Association in 1974.  As a young teacher - and while raising a family - she studied piano privately for a time with another fellow teacher, attended many workshops and conferences, and throughout her career has been an example of growth and excellence in teaching and professionalism.

With a Bachelor of Music Education degree from UW Oshkosh, Mary has also been active as a violinist in the Oshkosh community.  She was a long-time member of the Oshkosh Symphony, and taught strings in Oshkosh public schools for 6 years (while continuing her piano teaching).

Mary has been a valued contributor to OAMTA in many capacities, most recently as Treasurer.  She served on numerous committees and co-chaired several events such as OAMTA performances and fund-raisers.  She and her students always participated fully in OAMTA and WMTA events.

Though she recently retired from teaching, Mary’s contributions to the profession, and to OAMTA in particular, will continue to be felt and appreciated.  OAMTA is pleased to honor her as
our 2010 Member of
the Year.
